Madison County Tourism Reports Slight Increase In Visitor Spending In 2005 Morrisville, NY Visitors to Madison County in 2005 spent $30.8 million, up slightly from $30.7 million in the previous year. Madison County Tourism, Inc., which compiled the numbers, says that the fourth quarter of 2005 was "very strong," allowing the county to edge past its 2004 numbers. The 2005 totals are based on official taxable hotel-room sales of $5.23 million. The executive director of Madison County Tourism, James Walter, says he's please that the mid-year increase in the occupancy tax and high gas prices did not decrease spending in the county. "2005 was a challenging year. There is more hotel inventory in the casino in Oneida County [Turning Stone Casino & Resort], gas prices went through the roof, and there is an overall perception that the economy is weak despite the strong economic indicators," he says. Tourism contributed $1.23 million in sales tax revenue to Madison County, making 2005 the second straight year that over $1 million in sales-tax revenue was generated. |
